berlenga island: The Forte de São João Baptista

Built on a rock adjacent to the Berlenga island and connected to it by a small bridge, there stands the Forte de São João Baptista, a Manueline military fortress built in 1502.

How to get to the Island:

Access to the island is by boat, with departures from Peniche harbour. It takes roughly 30 minutes to reach Berlenga Grande.

It is important to make the ticket reservation the day before to make sure you'll have a place on one of the boats, especially if it is during the season. There is a certain amount of tickets they sell per day during the season. The cruise itself and the island are a great experience!

Bear in mind that if the weather is difficult, times will change and boats may be cancelled. The sea can be very rough and if you are sensitive it is a good idea to go without breakfast.

The access to the island is severely controlled, due to environmental reasons. Only three companies make public transport, from spring to fall, but 90% or more of the visitors use a boat called Cabo Avelar Pessoa. It belongs to Viamar and may be booked in advance by phone (+351 262 785 646)
